RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The host's answer has an important role in periodontal disease, and the mast cells have a prime role. Such cells seem to be influenced by estrogen deficiency. The objective was to evaluate the mast cells and the expression of metalloproteinase(MMP)-9 in periodontal disease induced in ovariectomized rats. METHODS: For that purpose, 36 rats were used; 18 ovariectomized (OVX) and another 18 Sham-operated (SHAM). After 60 days the periodontal disease was induced by a ligature around the first lower right molars (group P). The opposite side was the control group (group C). The euthanasia occurred 3, 7 and 14 days after the placement of the ligature. The gingiva was removed and analyzed histochemically and immunohistochemically to quantify the mast cells and to analyze MMP 9 expression. RESULTS: By comparing the groups SHAM-P and C and groups OVX-C and P, it was noted that mast cells from group C were higher than P in all experimental periods. When comparing groups SHAM-C and OVX-C, significant factors were not found. When comparing groups SHAM-P and OVX-P, there was an inclination for mast cells reduction with time. The MMP-9 expression was related to the presence of periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that periodontitis led to mast cells reduction and MMP-9 increase. The ovariectomy itself did not alter the MMP-9 expression and did not influence the presence of mast cells in rat papilla, however, when associated to inflammation led to a reduction of mast cells.

Palatogingival groove (PGG) is a developmental anomaly affecting mainly the maxillary incisors.PGG incidence, depth, and length are clinically important because it may cause severe and localized periodontitis; and it may divide the root canal resulting in accessory foramina. This study aimed to analyze the presence, shape, length, and depth of the palatogingival groove in maxillary central incisors. 1,668 maxillary central incisors were used. Each tooth had its root portion inspected inorder to verify PGG presence and depth. The found palatogingival grooves were classified according tothe system proposed by Gu [5], as follows: Type I (short and superficial), Type II (long and superficial),and Type III (long and deep). All teeth that showed the grooves were radiographed; five teeth had their root surface analyzed through Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM); and four teeth corresponding to each PGG type were sent to obtain histological sections and then submitted to microscopic analysis.Of the 1.668 analyzed incisors, 27 (1.61%) showed the palatogingival groove: 8 (29.6%) Type I, 17(63%) type II, and 2 (7.4%) Type III. Microscopic analysis revealed no communication between PGGand root canal. In conclusion, our results showed that PGG can be clinically and radiographically diagnosed on maxillary central incisors, with the type II being the most common. The professionals should be aware of the features of this groove dueto its severe clinical consequences.

The delay on diagnose severe root resorption can lead to tooth loss. Due to the fact that digital subtraction radiography is an important resource to detect initial mineral changes, this study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of the digital subtraction radiography and digital radiography in early diagnosis of the simulated apical and lingual external root resorption. Fourteen human lower incisors, submitted to simulated apical and lingual resorption cavities of different sizes, imaged with different angle projection variations were included in this study. The images were subtracted by the Regeemy® program, and receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance for each imaging system, and the diagnostic accuracy of both diagnosis methods for detecting lesions was conducted by the assessment of the pairs of radiography (digital and subtracted) by two radiologists. According to the results, there were no statistically significant differences between the methods in detecting lingual resorption, independently of the lesion dimension. There was also no difference on the apical resorption detection, except by the viewer two as to 10º horizontal and vertical angles, who related that on the larger cavity, the digital radiography was more reliable than the subtraction radiography. It was also further noticed that the deeper the cavity size, the better the apical and lingual resorption detection; and the radiography taken of the apical and lingual resorption, with the smaller vertical and horizontal angles variation ensured a better assessment of the image, mainly on the shallower cavity size.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Root resorption can cause damage in orthodontic patients. Digital subtraction radiography (DSR) is a useful resource for the detection of mineral losses. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of digital radiography (DR) and DSR in detecting simulated external root resorption. Examiner agreement between the 2 techniques was also evaluated. METHODS: Root resorptions of various sizes were simulated on the apical and lingual aspects of 49 teeth from 9 dry human mandibles. The teeth were radiographed in standardized conditions. The radiographs were registered with Regeemy Image Registration and Mosaicking (version 0.2.43-RCB, DPI-INPE, São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil) and subtracted with Image Tool (University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio). The subtracted images and the digital radiographs were evaluated by 3 oral radiologists. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were found for the methods in the detection of apical root resorptions, independently from lesion size, and of lingual resorptions of 1.2 mm or greater. DSR was significantly better than DR for detection of lingual resorptions up to 1 mm. Resorptions less than 0.5 mm were not precisely detected by either method. DSR provided better intraexaminer and interexaminer agreement than did DR. CONCLUSIONS: Both methods are precise for detection of apical root resorptions as small as 0.5 mm and lingual resorptions of 1 mm or more. However, DSR frequently performed better than did DR.

RESUMEN

The correct radiographic identification of ossification of the pterygospinous and pterygoalar ligaments plays an important role in surgical procedures for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. Most of these procedures are performed through the foramen ovale, a site where these ligaments can be found to be partially or completely ossified. We studied the radiographic features of these ossified ligaments and their location in relation to the foramen ovale by the Hirtz axial technique. For this purpose, 93 dry skulls from the Discipline of Anatomy, São José dos Campos Dental School, UNESP, which presented partial or complete ossification of these ligaments, were radiographed. The pterygospinous ligament was detected on 27.97% of radiographs and was partially ossified in 19.36% of cases and completely ossified in 8.61%. The pterygoalar ligament was present in 62.35% of radiographs, being partially ossified in 49.44% and completely ossified in 12.91%. The pterygospinous ligaments was found to be partially and completely ossified on the same radiograph in 3.23% of cases, whereas the pterygoalar ligament appeared partially and completely ossified on the same radiograph in 6.45%. Furthermore, the pterygospinous ligament was thinner than the pterygoalar ligament and located more medially in relation to the foramen ovale. The pterygoalar ligament formed a large bone bar lateral to the foramen ovale, often obliterating the lumen of the latter. The Hirtz axial technique is an excellent tool for the observation of complete or partial ossification of the pterygospinous and pterygoalar ligaments in surgical procedures for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia performed through the foramen ovale.

RESUMEN

Summary An evaluation was made of the local action of alendronate sodium (A), hydroxyapatite (HA) and the association of both substances (A + HA), in different molar concentrations, on the femur bone repair of ovariectomized rats. Ninety-eight animals were divided into seven groups: control (C), starch (S), alendronate 1 mol (A1), alendronate 2 mols (A2), hydroxyapatite 1 mol (HA1), hydroxyapatite 2 mols (HA2) and the association of alendronate + hydroxyapatite (A + HA). Rats weighing about 250 g were ovariectomized and 2.5-mm diameter bone defects were made on the left femur 30 days later. Each experimental group had defects filled with appropriate material, except for group C (control). The animals were killed 7 and 21 days after surgery. Histological, histomorphometric and statistical analyses of bone neoformation in the bone defect site were performed. From the histological standpoint, the major differences occurred after 21 days. All specimens in groups C, S, HA1 and HA2 presented linear closure of the bone defect, and most animals in groups A1, A2 and A + HA showed no bone neoformation in the central area of the defect. No statistically significant difference was found among the experimental groups after 7 days; after 21 days, group HA2 presented the highest amount of neoformed bone. There was no significant difference among groups A1, A2 and A + HA in the two study periods. It was concluded that alendronate, either isolated or in association with hydroxyapatite, had an adverse effect on bone repair in this experimental model. Moreover, the hydroxyapatite used here proved to be biocompatible and osteoconductive, with group HA2 showing the best results.

RESUMEN

Objective: The aim of this study was to verify, in vivo and in vitro, the prevalence of root canal bifurcation in mandibular incisors by digital radiography. Material and Methods: Four hundred teeth were analyzed for the in vivo study. Digital radiographs were taken in an orthoradial direction from the mandibular incisor and canine regions. The digital radiographs of the canine region allowed visualizing the incisors in a distoradial direction using 20o deviation. All individuals agreed to participate by signing an informed consent form. The in vitro study was conducted on 200 mandibular incisors positioned on a model, simulating the mandibular dental arch. Digital radiographs were taken from the mandibular incisors in both buccolingual and mesiodistal directions. Results:The digital radiography showed presence of bifurcation in 20% of teeth evaluated in vitro in the mesiodistal direction. In the buccolingual direction, 17.5% of teeth evaluated in vivo and 15% evaluated in vitro presented bifurcation or characteristics indicatingbifurcation. Conclusions: Digital radiography associated with X-ray beam distally allowed detection of a larger number of cases of bifurcated root canals or characteristics of bifurcation.

We present a rare case of dextrocardia in the corpse of a female child, aged approximately one year old, presenting situs solitus. The cases of dextrocardia reported in the literature normally describe multiple associated cardiac malformations. In the present study, it is noteworthy the fact that a complete specular image of the heart and the vessels of the base of the heart was not found. There was no atrioventricular discordance or other intra and extracardiac malformations, which are commonly seen in cases of dextrocardia. A large ductus arteriosus was found, as well as the anomalous position of the right portion of the heart.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The arterial hypertension is a disorder characterized by relevant alterations in the bone tissue. The sodium alendronate is indicated in the treatment of bone diseases, because of its affinity with the hydroxyapatite, inhibiting the bone reabsorptions. OBJECTIVE: To analyze local action of the sodium alendronate in the bone repair of spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). METHODS: A bone defect was created in the left femur of 80 rat. In agreement with the material used at the place, four groups were created: control (C), starch (St), alendronate 1 mol (A1) and alendronate 2 mol (A2). After 7 and 21 days, the animals were sacrificed. Histomorfometrical and histological analyses were accomplished and the data were submitted the variance analysis (ANOVA) and test of Tukey (5%). RESULTS: At 7 days, in the area of the defect, conjunctive tissue with hemorrhage and inflammation in all of the groups was observed. Some presented osteoid matrix. The groups A1 and A2 presented, further, a fibrin net. At 21 days, the bone trabeculae practically closed the extension of the defect in the groups C and St. In the group A1 of male animals, trabeculae were observed that irradiated from the medullary canal to the area of the defect. In the groups A1 and A2, only presence of conjunctive fabric with low osteoid deposit was observed. An outstanding histological discovery was the formation of extracortical subperiosteal bone tissue in animals of the groups A1 and A2. CONCLUSION: The administration of sodium alendronate did not contribute to bone repair in SHR rat, but possibly has been responsible for the extracortical bone formation observed.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the bone healing in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and compare the results with normotensive rats, evaluating male and female animals. METHODS: A bone drill defect was created in the left femur of 24 SHR (12 males and 12 females) and 24 normotensive rats (12 males and 12 females). The animals were divided into two groups and sacrificed 7 and 21 days after the surgical procedure. After the routine laboratory processing, histological and histometric analysis were carried out and data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukeys test (5%). RESULTS: Males and females from the same group had similar histological characteristics. After seven days, all animals presented irregular bone trabeculae. The periosteal osteoblasts were flattened in SHR, and presented a cuboid shape in normotensive animals. After 21 days, the bone defects of all specimens showed a linear closure in all the superficial extension. In addition, SHR presented flattened osteoblasts surrounding the bone trabeculae, while normotensive ones showed cuboidal cells. Statistical analysis of the histometric data indicated similar means between the male and female groups, except for normotensive rats on day 7. In addition, a larger amount of new bone formation was observed in hypertensive when compared to normotensive rats on day 21, in males as well as females. CONCLUSION: We conclude that bone healing in SHR was more significant than in normotensive ones, as shown by the histological and histometric evaluation 21 days after surgery.

After the routine laboratory processing, histological and histometric analysis were carried out and data were submitted to ANOVA and TukeyÆs test (5 percent).
